Shop Pant Sew Along

We released our first sewing pattern of 2022, The Shop Pant, and it has been graciously accepted into your sewing rooms. Detailed instructions are provided with each style, but seeing the process in action is always helpful.

Watch each step and learn the best approach to sewing pockets, zipper, waistband, hems, etc… You can fast forward to the step you need help with or listen to each section and hear all of the great tips Leigh has to share. We recommend making a muslin first to determine any pattern modifications you may need. The benefit of making your own clothes is being able to fit a pattern to your specific body shape, and having pants that fit you perfectly are what dreams are made of. You’ll be able to crank out a Shop Pant in every color once you get that pattern adjusted to your specifications.

First in the mix is “Prep and Pockets”. We cover what thread and needle to use, notions and helpful tools. The leg pieces get attached before you see the front and back pockets come together.

Next up is “The Zipper”. This is probably the trickiest part of sewing the Shop Pant. There are so many ways a zipper fly can be assembled, which is why YouTube exists… we think. Following our detailed instructions and watching this video will make it a breeze.

Video 3 of 5 might be the best part of this process, because you have what is looking like a pair of pants! “Seaming and Belt Loops” get you over half of the way to finished pants. Inseam and outseams go together, the belt loops are made and set into place.

“The Waistband” is second to last. We give tips about how to sew through all those layers, including the use of a tool called a Hump Jumper (aka “jean-a-ma-jig”).

You are basically done by the time you get to “Button and Finishing”. You could sew on a regular button or see how to apply a jean button for that profesh look. There’s some Sew Co. behind the scenes, in this video, that demonstrate how finishings happen during mass clothing production. Bonus!

We hope this video is a bonus tool for you and your home sewing experience. Show us how your Shop Pants come together on social media with #ShopPant . We love seeing what you make.
