Our latest sewing pattern is almost ready! The Elova Top is sleeveless and collarless with a clean button-front closure, effortlessly elegant in its simplicity. A front welt pockets, back yoke, and center back pleat add thoughtful structure and movement to this wardrobe-ready top. The Elova Top was also designed as a companion to the Willow Skirt, and the two pair beautifully together.

The Elova Top is designed to work hard across your fabric stash. Reach for a casual, everyday fabric for a utilitarian staple, or elevate it with something more refined for a polished, dressed-up finish.

The Design

The Elova Top is built on quiet details that elevate it from the inside out. The collarless, sleeveless silhouette keeps things clean and unfussy, while the button-front closure, bust dart, and front welt pocket give it a tailored, intentional feel. At the back, a yoke seam and center box pleat add structure and ease — details that make a real difference in how the top moves and wears.

The result is a top that sits somewhere between a classic shirt and a refined shell: polished enough to dress up, relaxed enough to reach for on an ordinary day.

Finishing is given the same attention as the design itself. French seams and bias-bound armholes give the interior a clean, professional finish worthy of the exterior. The welt pocket tutorial offers two paths: a straightforward method for confident beginners, and a fully enclosed French seam version for those who love a flawless finish inside and out.

Fabric

The Elova Top was originally designed for a medium-weight cotton twill — a fabric chosen for its clean structure and hold — and that's still an excellent starting point.

Any light to medium weight woven with enough structure to support the center front buttons will work beautifully. Some directions to consider:

  • Everyday and casual: poplin, chambray, oxford weave, denim, cotton twill

  • Elevated and refined: gabardine, lightweight suiting, silk noil, a crisp linen

The key is structure. Fabrics that hold their shape well will maintain the clean lines of the button front and welt pocket, and support the overall silhouette. Avoid anything too drapey or soft for this version. We'll be sharing a pattern hack for using more delicate fabrics at a later date.

The Construction

The Elova Top is suitable for sewists who are comfortable with the basics and ready to try something a little more considered. The construction is methodical and rewarding, with elevated finishing built in throughout rather than treated as an afterthought.

A few things to know before you start:

  • French seams are used throughout for a clean, enclosed interior — no raw edges in sight.

  • Bias-bound armholes finish the sleeveless edge beautifully and eliminate the need for a facing.

  • The welt pocket is fully explained in two ways: a clear, approachable method in the main instructions, and a bonus video tutorial demonstrating a fully enclosed French seam version for a truly impeccable finish inside and out.

Fit Notes

The Elova Top is designed to fit comfortably through the bust before gently flaring at the hem. The center back box pleat adds ease and movement. The ideal finished length falls approximately 1–2 inches below the natural waistline. Shorten and lengthen lines are included at two points — between the shoulders and bust, and below the armhole — for those who want to fine-tune the fit. The instructions also include guidance on moving the bust dart up or down the front bodice to accommodate your individual bust point placement — a small adjustment that can make a significant difference in fit.
