How to Bind a Neckline

You learned how to make bias tape in a previous blog post. Now you get to use it. Follow these steps when you’re binding the neckline of our Day Dress pattern.

Step 1

- Fold and press the bias tape in half.
- The seams will be on the inside.

 
 

Step 2

- Starting at the center back of the dress, line up raw edges of the bias with raw edges of neckline.
- Leave a 2-3” tail on each end of the bias.

 
 

Step 3

- Begin 1” from center back seam and ending 1” on opposite side.
- Stitch binding to neckline edge at 1/4” seam allowance.

 

Step 4

- Trim some of the bias if there is quite a bit left.
- Leave a 2-3” tail on each side.

 

Step 5

- Line up bias at center back seam and snip about 1/8” to indicate where to stitch the bias closed.
- Bring tails of binding together and stitch where you just clipped.
- Trim the tails and leave 1/4” seam allowance.
- Press seam open.

 

Step 6

-Stitch the rest of the binding to the neckline.
-Press seam open, then press binding inside.

Step 7

-Topstitch binding to inside of dress, 1/8” from edge.
-Press flat.
