Willow Skirt Sewing Pattern
The Design
This full-length skirt combines refined construction techniques with modern wearability, creating a versatile wardrobe essential that is meant for everyday. Designed to sit at your natural waistline with a hemline that falls just above the ankle, this pattern celebrates both form and function. The box pleats at the front and back help to create a beautiful full sweep that moves with you while maintaining a polished, structured appearance at the waist. You’ll learn to create impeccably clean side seams using French seams—a beautiful method that encloses raw edges for a professional interior finish. The invisible zipper, thoughtfully placed in the side seam, features bound edges for added durability and refinement. It is a true wardrobe workhorse that never sacrifices style for practicality.

Fabric
The fabric you choose will shape the character of your Willow Skirt. While this pattern was initially designed with a structured silhouette in mind, it works beautifully with a range of fabric options depending on the look you want to achieve.
For a structured silhouette: Medium-weight woven fabrics with a crisp hand will give you the originally intended result. Cotton twill, linen, wool, seersucker, gabardine, or structured cotton blends are all excellent choices. These fabrics give the box pleats beautiful definition and help the skirt maintain its intended silhouette—full and flowing at the sweep while staying smooth and fitted at the waist.
For a softer, relaxed drape: If you prefer a more fluid look, softer fabrics like rayon challis, lightweight chambray, or cotton lawn will create a lovely straight silhouette as the pleats gently release and the fabric falls closer to the body. This gives the Willow a more casual, effortless feel.
Something in between: Lightweight fabrics with texture—think gauzy or double weave cottons—offer a beautiful compromise. They maintain enough structure to honor the pleating while still moving gracefully with you.
Whatever fabric calls to you, choose something you love to wear. This skirt is designed to become a favorite, so select a fabric that feels wonderful against your skin and makes you excited to sew.
The Construction
This pattern is perfect for sewists ready to elevate their skills with professional techniques that make all the difference in the finished garment. We're doing something new with this one — the Willow Skirt guides you to cut, sew, and fit the waistband before touching any of the other pieces. It's a small shift in our instruction process for waistbands that makes a big difference in getting the fit right where it matters most.
You'll learn to create impeccably clean side seams using French seams—a beautiful method that encloses all raw edges for a professional interior finish that's as lovely inside as it is outside. No serger required for these gorgeous seams.
The invisible zipper is thoughtfully placed in the side seam, keeping the focus on the beautiful drape and pleating of the skirt. You'll learn to install it with bound edges for added durability and refinement—a technique that ensures your handmade piece will last for years to come.
The construction process will teach you valuable skills including box pleat formation, precise waistband application, and finishing techniques that give your garment that special handmade quality.
We've designed the waistband to close with a four-part hook and bar closure, maintaining the same level of refined finishing found throughout the entire garment.
Versatile Styling
The beauty of the Willow Skirt lies in its versatility.
Dress it up: Pair with a silk blouse and heels for weddings, dinner parties, or special occasions. The full-length silhouette and structured waist create an elegant, formal look that feels effortless.
Keep it casual: Style with a tucked-in t-shirt and sneakers for weekend errands or coffee with friends. The comfortable waistline and easy movement make it perfect for everyday wear.
Layer for seasons: Add a fitted turtleneck and boots in cooler months, or wear with a simple tank and sandals when the weather warms. The timeless design transitions beautifully through the seasons.
Work-ready: Combine with a tailored blouse or sweater for a polished professional look that takes you confidently through your workday.
The neutral, classic silhouette means you can make it in any fabric that speaks to you—crisp cotton for summer, wool for winter, or luxurious linen for a special occasion piece.
