Sew Perfect Collar Points Every Time

Here’s an odd little trick to get collar points to look super pro. It doesn’t require an extra tool or any magic powers. It’s just a tiny counter-intuitive step that you would never think to try. This sewing trick was introduced to us by our guest designer, Abigail Glaum-Lathbury, for the Choice Pattern and we’re hooked. That’s the special part of sewing with friends. You don’t know what you don’t know until someone surprises you with a new trick. There’s a full video at the end, but the steps are broken down below.

-Begin stitching along one of the ends of the collar with 1/4” seam allowance.
-Stop 3/8” away from the collar edge, leave needle in fabric and pivot 90 degrees.
-Stitch a couple stitches. Leaving needle in fabric, pivot again and line up collar edge with edge of machine foot (or 1/4” from collar edge).

-This creates a blunt edge at the collar point.
-Trim the excess seam allowance at the collar point, making sure to not clip through stitchline.

-Push the seam allowance on one side of the collar point toward the back (behind the collar).
-Push the seam allowance on the opposite side of the collar point toward the front (in front of the collar).
-This step will organize how all that bulk gets pushed up into the collar point.

-Without needing a tool to push all the bulk through, you can can create the most perfect collar point.

Try this out and see if it makes an improvement to your collar sewing. There is a full video of this technique below for a more in-depth tutorial. Leave a comment and tell us how it goes for you!
