Power of the Needle

Hey y'all, its Libby here, feeling very energized and excited for the year of sewing potentials! After we conducted our survey at the end of last year, I was admittedly tickled to hear that the majority reason for sewing is that you simply ENJOY it! I know that might sound obvious, but since we sew for a living here at Sew Co., sometimes I need that reminder that sewing can be hobby. It was for me since I was eight, but over the years I’ve sewn less. The days when the crew needs help on production and I can lend a hand on the machine are some of my most enjoyable work days. Thank you all for reminding me of that.

For me, sewing has become a mission to preserve skill, and to create sustainable models for textile production. While you all are having a blast, I commend you for being part of a powerful movement as well. I believe sewing your own clothes is the most sustainable fashion choice you can make. So BRAVO! I love the fact that doing good can be so enjoyable – planning your makes for the year, choosing fabric you love to work with, connecting with the community on techniques, and then bringing the garment to life with pride and self-admiration. It's a very full practice.

There are so many ideas to dig into, but I'm most craving new thoughts on sustainable fashion and how the home-sewing community are great stewards in this movement. I've had a reading list I've been meaning to get to for years (I've never even read Overdressed by Elizabeth Klein, sshhhh!), and then these two books showed up on my desk at Sew Co. from Rosie (who you might have seen in our How to Measure video). Rosie has a degree in sustainable textiles and is an incredible member of the Sew Co. team.

They suggested the Craft of Use by Kate Fletcher as my first read. And so now I have an assignment! Do you want to read it with me and talk about it after? A super loose book-club of sorts? Sign up here to get more info (no pressure to commit) and we can schedule a live conversation, or DM, email, post comments here. The deadline will be Feb 17 to have it read. What do you say???
